LA’VERE Corbin-Ong’s first international goal set the momentum for Harimau Malaya in the 7-1 win over minnows Timor Leste in Friday’s pre-World Cup first leg qualifier at National Stadium in Bukit Jalil .
The left-back opened the floodgates with a brilliant header off a Safawi Rasid cross in the 12th minute in only his second appearance for Malaysia.
While most newcomers would find it difficult in international matches, the 28-year-old is enjoying every moment of his spell.
Understandably, he thanked his Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) teammates, who are also donning national colours, for his fine performance.
Against World No 195 Timor Leste, coach Tan Cheng Hoe fielded five of nine JDT players, who are in the national squad, in his starting line up.
The others were captain Farizal Marlias, Safawi, Adam Nor Azlin and Syafiq Ahmad. Forward Akhyar Rashid, also a JDT player, was introduced as a second half sub stitute.
“It is good with all these players here becauseIknow their playing style. However, the other players also have their own abilities... it is all about communication during training and matches.
“Playing together with some of my JDT teammates here has helped me in many ways .
“For instance, I am used to the way Adam plays in defence. With Safawi, we have an understanding of how to move the ball forward.
“I also enjoy playing with Mohamadou Sumareh (who plays for Pahang). “Anyway, I share a very good understanding with the national players from other clubs. We have good chemistry.”
The England-born felt he made a few mistakes during the match but is happy with the result going into Tuesday’s return leg.
