Clubs need to release players for AFC Under-19 assignment

NATIONAL Under-19 team manager Datuk Kamarul Ariffin Shahar hopes M-League clubs will release players for centralised training ahead of the AFC Championship in Uzbekistan on Oct 14-31.

Kamarul said it is important to have all players in camp to prepare for the competition.

Some M-League teams may not want to release players for the camp as they have just started non-contact training.

Kamarul disclosed that the FA of Malaysia (FAM) are negotiating with the concerned clubs as the national body hope to finalise the 35-man training squad by next week.

"If there are problems, we will discuss further for a win-win situation," said Kamarul yesterday.

"Every footballer's mission is to represent the country. If players are only playing for feeder clubs, it would be better for them to attend the camp.

"It will be far more meaningful. Furthermore, the AFC Under-19 Championship is a qualifier for the Under-20 World Cup."

Brad Maloney's side have received invites from Turkey and France (Paris Cup) for invitational tournaments.

"We are evaluating both offers at the moment and also awaiting feedback from the National Security Council and the Health Ministry on travel restrictions," Kamarul added.

For the record, Malaysia were runners-up in the 1959, 1960 and 1968 editions of the AFC Under-19 Championship.
