Shahrel poised for Golden Boot

Shahrel Fikri Fauzi is in touching distance of becoming the first local player since Abdul Hadi Yahya to win the Super League's Golden Boot award.

The Perak striker took his tally to nine goals, two more than Terengganu's Dominique Da Sylva, by scoring four times in the 5-1 thrashing of Felda United in Ipoh on Friday.

The 26-year-old netted in the 17th, 48th, 68th and 86th minutes with Brazilian Guilherme de Paula (53rd) scoring the other goal for Perak. Felda replied through Nicolas Velez in the 62nd minute.

Abdul Hadi won the Golden Boot in 2011 by scoring 20 goals and is the last local player to achieve it.

However, foreign players were banned from the league in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Indra Putra Mahayuddin is the only local player to win the Golden Boot in the presence of foreign players.

He achieved it when he netted 15 goals for Pahang in 2004, the first season of the current format.

Perak coach Mehmet Durakovic praised Shahrel for his exploits.

"Shahrel produced a great performance. However, others also played well for this win.

"I am happy for Shahrel as he is a good player. He works very hard in training and matches.

"It is our third straight win, and I hope we will collect maximum points in our remaining matches," said Durakovic on Friday.

With the win, Perak have 17 points with two matches to play while Felda have seven points.
