Royal request for Cheng Hoe

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national coach Tan Cheng Hoe was convinced Selangor was his next coaching destination after he was approached by the club to speak to their president Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah about two weeks ago.

Cheng Hoe, 54, is now the head coach of the Red Giants, and his mission is to help the club regain their glory days.

"About two weeks ago, I had a discussion with (Selangor FA president) Tengku Amir. It was a good discussion. We touched on the direction and future of the club.

"Terms and conditions were agreed upon during. Several coaches were vying for the job, and I am lucky to be here.

"Tengku Amir wants me to take Selangor to the next level. It is a big task, but I am ready for this mission.

"Selangor are one of the biggest clubs in Malaysian football, and I am honoured to be part of the team.

"I hope Selangor can progress and develop into a strong team in the future.

"I know fans will judge my performance, but I had experienced it when I was the national coach. This will motivate me to help Selangor reach for the stars.

Cheng Hoe said former international Nidzam Jamil will be his assistant.

The coach, however, cannot do much in the Super League with only four matches to go. However, Cheng Hoe can start afresh in the Malaysia Cup.

"The target is the 2023 season. The remainder of the season will offer me a chance to plan for the new season.

"I took a break from football after my national team stint, which ended after last year's AFF Cup. However, I still watched some of the M-League matches.

"Selangor have quality players but are inconsistent. They make a lot of individual mistakes and concede easy goals.

"I am here to fix all those issues and prepare for the new season," Cheng Hoe added.

Selangor are eighth in the Super League with only 20 points from 18 games.
