Sabah's Likas Stadium gets VAR for AFC Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: The Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu will become only the second venue in Malaysia to use the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.

The VAR will be used during Sabah's AFC Cup campaign starting on Sept 21.

The National Stadium in Bukit Jalil was the first venue in Malaysia to use VAR.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) implemented VAR at the venue during last year's AFC Cup final between KL City and Oman's All Seeb.

Sabah State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin said the Likas Stadium will undergo upgrading works for the VAR technology in line with specifications laid out by AFC and the FA of Malaysia.

"The use of high technology, including the electronic scoreboard system and VAR, at Likas Stadium is good for Sabah football.

"Having these facilities available will positively impact other sports. It will also increase the credibility of sports in Sabah," said Ellron on his Facebook page recently.

The VAR will be used for the first time at the Likas Stadium when Sabah take on Singapore's Hougang United in an AFC Cup Group H match on Sept 21.

Other teams in the group are Vietnam's Hai Phong and Vietnam's PSM Makassar.
