JOHOR BARU: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) have decided to re-sign prolific striker Fernando Forestieri to strengthen their squad for the 2024-2025 season.
In a statement released by the club today, JDT chief executive officer Alistair Edwards said the decision was made following a discussion between Tunku Mahkota of Johor (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and Forestieri.
"Following talks between club owner HRH Major General Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Crown Prince of Johor, Forestieri and myself, the forward will remain in the Johor Darul Ta'zim FC squad in addition to three new foreign players to strategically strengthen the team in certain positions for the 2024-25 season," said Edwards.
JDT had earlier this month released the Argentine as part of a financial restructuring exercise which aims to reduce club spending by up to 40 per cent.
The move to re-sign Forestieri will be welcomed by the club's fans who were surprised to see him being released. Forestieri made 69 appearances, scoring 47 goals and contributing 21 assists, since signing with JDT in 2022.
The Southern Tigers recently confirmed the signing of Syrian international Jalil Elias and former Portugal Under-21 player Francisco Geraldes. One more import player is expected to be brought in.
