KUALA LUMPUR: Football pundit Datuk Richard Scully has urged the fringe players in the Harimau Malaya team to step up and show more class when they face Kyrgyzstan in a crucial World Cup Group D qualifier in Bishkek on June 6.
Kim Pan Gon's side will head to Bishkek with a mission to reignite their hopes of advancing to the third round of the World Cup qualifiers for the first time.
Malaysia, who have six points from four matches, must beat Kyrgyzstan first to set the tone before closing their Group D campaign against Taiwan in Bukit Jalil on June 11.
Harimau Malaysia have been hit hard by injuries, with acid-attack victim Faisal Halim, Arif Aiman Hanapi, Romel Morales, Azam Azmi Murad and Darren Lok among those not available for the matches.
"I view the absence of regular players as a hidden blessing for the fringe players to prove their worth to Pan Gon. While some may lack the experience, their passion and eagerness could spark something positive," said Richard.
Richard believes emphasising the importance of focusing on the positives could trigger a turnaround in their campaign.
"These players must show commitment and determination. If the team are feeling positive, we might witness a remarkable resurgence," said Richard.
Richard hopes players like Safawi Rasid and Akhyar Rashid will step up in Bishkek.
"They are seasoned players who have experienced success and setbacks. If they can lead the charge, Malaysia will stand a chance."
