KUALA LUMPUR: Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has called for swift updates from the police on the acid attack on national footballer Faisal Halim, which happened on May 5.
Speaking at the launch of the National Women's League in Kuala Lumpur today, Yeoh echoed the sentiments expressed by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah apart from the public's outcry.
"The lack of updates from the police regarding the Faisal case is deeply concerning not only to Sultan Sharafuddin, but also to numerous sports enthusiasts who seek justice and closure.
"It is crucial for us to move forward in this matter. Without clear progress from the investigation, we cannot ensure justice for Faisal, who is a national asset," said Yeoh.
Yeoh also touched on the ongoing controversy involving the Malaysian Football League, FAM, and Selangor FC.
Selangor FC were fined RM100,000 by MFL, docked three league points and ordered to play a home match behind closed doors against JDT.
"The completion of the appeals process is essential for transparency and fairness.
"I am aware that Selangor intend to appeal, and I hope for a fair resolution," said Yeoh.
The minister also defended FAM president Datuk Hamidin Amin, who has come under criticism recently over the issue.
"During times of adversity, the knee-jerk reaction is often to demand terminations.
"However, identifying the root of issues is key. In this instance, the blame does not lie with Hamidin. He has shown responsive leadership and a commitment to addressing concerns," said Yeoh.
The launch of the third season of the National Women's League was another focal point of Yeoh's address, where she commended FAM for its efforts in advancing women's football in Malaysia.
"I congratulate FAM for their dedication to the development of women's football.
"The increased participation in this year's league reflects progress, and I hope to see continued growth, potentially involving universities in the future," said Yeoh.
