Vicente hopes to help Harimau roar louder despite uncertain future

KUALA LUMPUR: Pau Marti Vicente may be unsure about his long-term future as Malaysia's caretaker coach, but his focus is clear — getting Harimau Malaya ready for a crucial Asian Cup qualifying campaign starting in March next year.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) appointed Vicente as interim coach following the resignation of former head coach Kim Pan Gon in July.

Vicente passed his first test with flying colours by leading Malaysia to victory in the Merdeka Tournament last month.

However, his next major challenge, the AFF Cup in December, could determine whether FAM makes his role permanent.

Vicente and his 26-member squad departed for Auckland on Monday ahead of their friendly against world No. 95 New Zealand at North Harbour Stadium on Oct 14.

"We are now preparing for the Asian Cup qualifiers after falling short in the World Cup qualifiers.

"For me, it's crucial to play quality friendlies ahead of the qualifiers. Tough opponents will better prepare us for the challenges ahead," said Vicente.

Before facing New Zealand, Harimau Malaya will play a friendly against a club side in Auckland on Friday.

"I think playing a strong club side will be beneficial for our preparations. More importantly, it gives my players valuable game time, which will help me assess their performances."

For the record, Malaysia last faced the All Whites in 2006, where they lost 2-1.

"It's been almost 20 years since we played New Zealand. They are a difficult team to face. While our Merdeka Tournament win was a great achievement, we must continue developing and progressing," Vicente added.

Malaysia missed out on direct qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup after being eliminated in the second round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

They finished third in Group D with 10 points from six matches.

To secure a spot in the Asian Cup, Malaysia must emerge as one of the six group champions from 24 teams in the third round of qualifiers.

The draw for the group stages will take place in December.
