Sze Fei-Izzuddin remain grounded despite hot streak

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani have become the most feared men's doubles pair in the world, winning three titles in the last three months since turning professional.

Their latest triumph came at the Super 500 Arctic Open on Sunday, where they overcame several top pairs, including former world No. 1 Fajar Alfian of Indonesia in the quarter-finals, current world No. 1 Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang in the semi-finals, and world No. 2 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen of Denmark in the final.

The winning purse of US$33,181 (RM142,000) in Finland brought their earnings from five tournaments to RM1.034 million since turning pro.

Their other World Tour victories include the Super 500 Japan Open in August and the Super 1000 China Open last month.

With their current form, the question arises: can any pair stop the world No. 8 from dominating men's doubles?

However, Sze Fei-Izzuddin do not want to get carried away.

Izzuddin, who dedicated their latest win to his wife on her 27th birthday, said: "We had some tough matches here, but we stayed physically and mentally strong to pull through.

"I don't want to talk about targets. We just want to focus on maintaining our mental and physical condition."

Next up for the pair is the Super 750 Denmark Open in Odense, which starts tomorrow.

They will face world No. 10 Lee Jhe Huei-Yang Po Hsuan of Taiwan in the first round on Wednesday.

Should they progress, they are likely to meet Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard of Denmark in the second round and may face Wei Keng-Wang Chang again in the quarter-finals.

Sze Fei echoed his partner's cautious approach heading into the Denmark Open.

"We don't want to put too much pressure on ourselves. The key to our success is trusting each other, staying persistent, and continuing to push forward."
