Bergson: 'My goals are secondary to JDT's success'

KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) striker Bergson Da Silva, the Super League's leading scorer, is more focused on his team's success than on personal achievements.

The Brazilian has netted 16 goals in 12 league matches this season, cementing his status as one of the league's top forwards.

Two of his goals came in JDT's 3-0 win over Selangor at MBPJ Stadium on Sunday, helping the team maintain their commanding form.

Despite his impressive scoring record, Da Silva insists that his priority is JDT's success.

"I'm very happy to deliver this win for the team because we all work so hard to stay on top," said Da Silva.

"But my goal tally is secondary. The most important thing is JDT's victory in every match, and I'm happy to help."

Da Silva admitted it was challenging to break through Selangor's defence on Sunday.

"Sunday's game wasn't easy. They (Selangor) have good players, and it was tough breaking through their defence," he said.

"Selangor have always been strong competitors, but we proved again that we are the team to beat."

Selangor defender Quentin Cheng said JDT's two first-half goals disrupted their game plan, making it difficult for a comeback.

"We tried our best," said Quentin.

"JDT are one of the best teams in Malaysia, so getting a good result against them is never easy.

"Even though we were behind, we tried to apply more pressure in the second half, but it just didn't work out for us."

With the win, JDT now lead the standings with 34 points, eight clear of second-placed Selangor.
