'The problem lies with the management, not the coach'

KUALA LUMPUR: The sudden resignation of Selangor head coach, Nidzam Jamil, has stunned the club and its fans.

And this year alone, two head coaches, an assistant, and a technical director resigned from Selangor FC.

It makes you wonder what is happening at the club.

Former Selangor footballer Azlan Johar said the problem lies not with the coach, but with the management itself.

In the past seven years, Selangor have gone through five coaches, including B. Satiananthan, Michael Feichtenbeiner, Karsten Neitzel, Tan Cheng Hoe, and now Nidzam, who has resigned after initially joining as an assistant in 2021.

"Nidzam's departure is a sad reflection of the deeper issues and something sinister at play in Selangor.

"If they want to find a replacement, they should consider local talent. But let's be honest, the results can be disappointing. Meanwhile, hiring external coaches hasn't yielded success either," said Azlan, pointing out the last time Selangor won silverware was the 2015 Malaysia Cup under Mehmet Durakovic.

Azlan said that pursuing a qualified coach is pointless without addressing the management's glaring deficiencies.

"Selangor need to focus on building a strong management team first. The current leadership has failed to effectively support the coaching staff," said Azlan.

He highlighted the critical need for autonomy in coaching.

"The management should not interfere in the coach's role. It's up to the coach to dictate how the team play, and a competent management team should trust their expertise."
