KUALA LUMPUR: In a bold critique of the current state of Malaysian football, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, the Regent of Johor and owner of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), has singled out Indonesian FA chairman Erick Thohir as a model for effective leadership that the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) needs.
In a series of X posts, Tunku Ismail expressed his concerns about the existing FAM leadership that is elected by affiliates.
"Those in the football industry lack vision, commitment, knowledge, and passion.
"In contrast, Erick Thohir possesses financial resources, expertise, and international connections, which have propelled Indonesian football forward in terms of infrastructure, league development, and national team performance," said Tuanku Mahkota Ismail.
The JDT owner stressed the need for accountability, highlighting the ongoing salary woes plaguing the M-League.
He pointed out that clubs often mismanage their finances, yet blame external factors.
"If wages are too high, why are clubs paying them? Negotiation and financial management are essential," said Tunku Mahkota Ismail.
This call to action comes amid mounting reports of unpaid salaries within the M- League, with the latest affecting A1 Semi-Pro League's PT Athletics, which boast former national stars like Amri Yahyah and Indra Putra Mahayuddin.
