KUALA LUMPUR: The meeting between the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) owner Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and FA of Selangor president Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has brought excitement to Malaysian football fans.
A Selangor Royal Office Facebook page posted several pictures of the meeting which was held at a hotel in the Klang Valley on Monday with a caption of Their Royal Highnesses engaging in discussions and exchanging views on various current issues.
Football fans believe the combined might of M-League heavyweights, Selangor and JDT, could elevate Malaysian football.
A fan, Imran Zainal, commented that the meeting is for the good of Malaysian football. "This is surely about the unification of Malaysian football," he posted on social media.
"A heart-to-heart discussion between TMJ/RMS/Sultan. Sharing views with one another, aiming for what's best for the people of both states and fostering noble camaraderie in all aspects of economy, sports, and culture. Daulat Tuanku. Johor and Selangor are like brothers," posted Bro Azam.
Faiz Naim posted: "Surely football fans from Johor and Selangor are wondering what they discussed, right?"
Muhammad Zakaria posted: "Daulat Tuanku. Take the good things in sports knowledge that TMJ has, which is very extensive. It's beneficial for the Selangor team and also for the country."
Selangor are the most decorated football club in Malaysia, in terms of overall honours, with 52 major trophies and 61 trophies collectively. However the Red Giants have been going through a lean time in recent years as their last silverware was their 33rd Malaysia Cup, won in 2015.
At the other end, JDT have been a rising power in recent times, winning the Super League title consecutively since 2014. The Southern Tigers also won the FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup four times each as well as the con tinental-level AFC Cup in 2015.
