No target for Gavin and Kelly

While Gavin Green and Kelly Tan will aim for the greens in Japan, the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) have not set any targets for them in the Olympics.

MGA just hope that Gavin and Kelly can better their results at the 2016 Olympics.

In their Olympic debuts in Rio, Gavin finished 47th with a three-over-par 287 in the men's category while Kelly came in 51st with 13-over-par 297 in the women's event.

"MGA hope that they (Gavin and Kelly) will look after themselves due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases worldwide.

"MGA have not set any specific target for them, only that they improve from their last Olympic outing," said MGA president Admiral (Rtd) Tan Sri Anwar Mohd Nor.

"We are helping the duo in anything that we can, such as travelling permit for Gavin to play in the European Tour, the quarantine procedures too.

"Their concern is where they need to isolate themselves three days (under Covid-19 measures) before taking the flight to Tokyo.

"They are also worried about contracting Covid-19 and unable to take part in the Olympics, though they are fully vaccinated."

Gavin was listed as 56th out of 60 golfers on the Olympic rankings at the end of the qualification period while Kelly was No 41.

Last year, the 28-year-old Gavin made the cut in 14 out of 18 competitions on the European Tour with his best finishing, a joint third place, at the Saudi International. Shooting a nine-under-271, Gavin shared third place with Phil Mickelson and Thomas Pieters.

This year, Gavin made the cut in three tournaments out of 13, with his best result of tied 41st at the Magical Kenya Open.

Kelly made the cut in 14 of 15 tournaments on the LPGA Tour last year with her best result, a tied ninth, at the Marathon LPGA Classic. This year, she made the cut in four out of nine competitions. Her best result was a joint 22nd placing at the Lotte Championship in April.
