KUALA LUMPUR: National No. 1 golfer Gavin Green steered Team Gavin to a commanding 14-8 victory over Team Danny in the inaugural Albatross Cup at Seri Selangor Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Ryder Cup-style team match play tournament, featuring Malaysia's leading professionals, saw Team Gavin build on their 6-4 advantage from Monday's fourball and foursome sessions to clinch the title.
Captain Green set the tone in the singles matches with an impressive 4&3 victory over Ervin Chang, while his brother, Galven, maintained the momentum with a 3&2 win against Khor Kheng Hwai.
Team Gavin's dominance continued through victories from Shahrifuddin Ariffin (3&2 over Malcolm Ting), Zia Izzuddeen (3&1 over Daeng Abdul Rahman Abdul Aziz), Marcus Lim (2-up against Danny), Danial Faidz (2-up against Fakhrul Akmal), and Casper Loh (3&2 against Nor Heikal Hadi).
Paul San and Nasrullah Zulkifli added to the tally with halved matches against Edven Ying and Amir Nazrin Jailani respectively.
Team Danny, captained by former national No. 1 Danny Chia, salvaged three points through Tony Lam (2&1 over Jeremy Kim), Wilson Choo (1-up over Afif Fathi), and Syahiran Syakir (1-up over Nicholas Fung).
"I am really proud of my players and how they stepped up over the last two days. Each and every one of them is a class act, and I am privileged to have them in my team," said Gavin.
The two captains have carved their names in Malaysian golf history. Gavin became the first Malaysian to win the Asian Tour Order of Merit in 2017, while Chia remains the country's only two-time Asian Tour winner and first player to make the cut in a men's Major at the 2010 British Open.
