Ridzuan achieves golden hat-trick at Asian Para Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Track and field star Ridzuan Puzi again stole the show as Malaysian athletes racked up another four gold, three silver and one bronze at the Indonesia Asian Para Games in Jakarta today,

Ridzuan, who is known for his prowess in the sprint events, added the men's long jump T36 gold to his earlier wins, emerging victorious in a new Asian and games record of 5.49 metres at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Uzbekistan's Izzat Turgunov (5.27m) and Sergey Kharlamov (4.62m) of Kazakhstan settled for second and third.

The former Asian record of 5.43m was set by Yang Yifei in 2016 while the former games record was Ridzuan's own (5.42m, 2014).

Ridzuan, 31, had earlier in the competition broken the world record en route to winning the 100m T36 and had also won the 400m gold.

Wong Kar Gee also did well to win silver in the men's long jump T12 with a leap of 7.05m.

After winning the women's road race earlier this week, cyclist Nur Azlia Syafinaz proved she is just as strong on track by clinching her second gold of the games via the 3,000m individual pursuit (B) at the Jakarta International Velo drome.

Indonesia's Sri Sugiyanti came in second while Azlia's national teammate Nur Syahida Tajudin clinched bronze. In the men’s category, Mohd Khairul Hazwan Wahab secured silver in the 4,000m individual pursuit (B).

Mohamad Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin, Mohd Najib Turano and Zuhairie Ahmad Tarmizi also finished second in the men's C 1-5 team sprint behind winners China. Hosts Indonesia settled for bronze.

In swimming, Muhammad Nur Syaiful Zulkafli emerged victorious in the men's 50m freestyle S5 in a new games record time of 34.09s (old record 35.54s) at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatics Centre.

Abu Bakar Nyat continued his fine form in the bowling competition, this time teaming up with Mohd Azrin Rahim and Zahidi Lamsah to win the trios (mixed) TPB8+TPB8/9+TPB9/10 gold on a combined score of 2,432 pinfalls at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Centre.

South Korea's 'B' and 'A' teams secured silver and bronze on 2,390 and 2,383 respectively. Abu Bakar had earlier this week won the men's singles TPB9 gold.
