DATUK Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, the secretary general, is poised to become the next Malaysia National Silat Federation (Pesaka) president at their annual general meeting (AGM) in September.
Pesaka president Datuk Seri Ali Rustam has made it clear that he will not be defending his post for another term.
It is believed that Ali, who has helmed Pesaka since 2009, intends to focus on his role as Melaka governor.
The long-serving Megat had also intended to relinquish his position as secretary general but was convinced not to leave during a Pesaka council meeting in Melaka on Sunday.
Instead, all the 20 Pesaka affiliates agreed that Megat should replace Ali as president while Datuk Md Sohaimi Mohamed Shah remains as deputy president.
Megat is thus set to win the top Pesaka post uncontested.
Megat, the son of the late seni silat lincah Malaysia founder Tan Sri Omardin Mauju, said he was surprised by the affiliates' request.
"Honestly, I was not expecting this decision by the affiliates," said Megat.
"If possible, I want someone from the younger generation to lead Pesaka but I guess my name has become synonymous with the sport after being involved in Pesaka for over 20 years."
