SRAM's revival plans squashed by MCO 3.0

The third Movement Control Order (MCO) could not have come at a worst time for the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM).

The sport was in the midst of resuming competitions after a long period of inactivity with the relatively successful SRAM PSA 1 event last month.

But with Malaysia now going through another nationwide MCO starting today, this will put a damper on SRAM's plans.

The MCO restrictions mean that SRAM are now forced to call off the SRAM PSA 2 competition scheduled to be held in Perlis from May 19-22.

On top of that, most of the players, based at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil, are also forced to suspend their training activities.

Only five players: seniors Ivan Yuen Yuen, Syafiq Kamal, Addeen Idrakie, Rachel Arnold and Aifa Azman got the green light to continue training.

"In light of the MCO restrictions, the players will not be able to have enough time to train and prepare for the tournament which starts on May 19," explained SRAM director Major (rtd) S. Maniam.

"And that is the main reason why we are calling off the event as it wouldn't make sense to have a competition when everyone is not fully prepared.

"It's a bit unfortunate but we hope to have the tournament rescheduled but we'll have to look at the calendar again once the MCO is lifted.

"Right now, all the players have been sent home because of MCO restrictions and training has been called off.

"The only exceptions are the five players as there are a couple of tournaments planned for them."

Meanwhile, there was good news for women's national No. 1 Low Wee Wern and men's national No. 2 Ivan Yuen as they got the green light at the eleventh hour to travel to Egypt for the El Gouna International from May 20-28.

"We initially had until May 10 (Monday) to inform the Professional Squash Association of our travel details, and they gave us a 48-hour extension in view of our situation," said Wee Wern.

"The approval came in today and it was really cutting it close as offices will be closed due to Hari Raya being on Thursday.

"But it's certainly a big relief for us and I definitely want to thank all the parties for sorting it out in the nick of time."
