Aira wins battle of sisters to retain national crown

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champion Aira Azman defeated top seed and sister Aifa to win the women's title at the National Squash Championships on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Aira won 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5 in 29 minutes at the NSC Courts, marking her second victory over her elder sister this year.

"I believe it is always mentally tough playing against your own sibling in a competition. Today, our mother was watching us in action.

"There was no pressure for me in the final. I feel great winning my second consecutive national title," said Aira, who will now prepare for the Sarawak Malaysia Games, or Sukma, on Aug. 16-24.

Meanwhile, national No. 2 Addeen Idrakie finally won his first national men's title after defeating second seed Syafiq Kamal 11-9, 11-3, 9-11, 11-5 in the final.

The 30-year-old Addeen was delighted to win his first national crown after 12 years of trying.

"I was fitter than Syafiq, and that was the key to my victory today," said Addeen, who will compete in the Tuanku Muhriz Cup, which begins on Aug 28 in Seremban.
