SPRINTER Azreen Nabila Alias can start packing her bags for next month's Tokyo Olympics.
Following Lee Hup Wei's qualification, World Athletics offered the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) an Olympic wildcard for a female athlete to compete in Tokyo.
Azreen, 21, got the nod after MAF's first choice was rejected.
"World Athletics offered us a wildcard, and the athlete had to be a female.
"We initially recommended another athlete but it was rejected. We then proposed Azreen, and the world body accepted our recommendation," said MAF president Datuk S. M. Muthu yesterday.
The Kuala Terengganu-born first grabbed attention at the 2018 Malaysia Games when she broke a 10-year-old 100m record.
She clocked 11.81s to erase Siti Fatimah Ahmad's old mark by 0.01s.
However, Azreen has not dipped below 12.00s since the feat.
In 2019, she clocked 12.14s to finish third at the Perak All-Comers in Ipoh and won a bronze in the mixed 4x100m relay at the Philippines Sea Games.
However, she failed to feature in the 100m event at the 2017 (Kuala Lumpur) and 2019 Sea Games editions.
