KUALA LUMPUR: The national women's squad lived up to expectations as they clinched a record 10th Asian Junior Team Squash Championships crown in India today.
Going up against a tricky Hong Kong side, the national players managed the pressure well to claim a 2-0 win in the final in Chennai.
In a 1-2-3 order of play, it was world No 65 Aira Azman who gave the team the lead and redeemed herself after her shock loss to Anahat Singh (India) in the semi-finals yesterday.
The Kedahan bounced back in style to beat Wai Size Wing 11-2, 11-9, 11-5 in the opening tie.
Buoyed by Aira's strong showing, Yasshmita Jadishkumar also rose to the occasion as she downed Toby Tse 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7.
After squaring the first two games, Yasshmita appeared to have the advantage when she claimed the third game 11-9.
But Toby was far from done as she took the fourth to force a decider.
Yasshmita, however, kept her composure to take the fifth game 11-7 and secure the title for Malaysia.
National assistant head coach Andrew Cross was certainly pleased with the team's achievement.
"From the start, Aira did really well to bounce back from her defeat in the semi-finals," said Cross.
"Yasshmita also did very well even though she got pegged back twice. She did enough to get us over the line and I'm happy that they won the title for the fourth time in a row.
"Overall I think the girls really gelled well together. They knew they had to either win as a team or lose as a team.
"I'm definitely happy with the way it's progressed and two of them, Whitney and Doyce, can still play in the future so it's a really good result for us."
The boys on the other hand finished joint-third after losing to Pakistan in the semi-finals yesterday.
