Today at the Sea Games: Cheong Min and Amirull deliver as cueists fall short

KUALA LUMPUR: It was another day of hits and misses from the national contingent competing at the Phnom Penh Sea Games.

Wushu exponent Tan Cheong Min, whose categories were not included at the last two editions of the Sea Games, claimed her second gold of the games today, this time through the women's nandao-nangun combined event.

The world champion had won the nanquan gold earlier on Wednesday.

Despite leaving three-time gold medallist Harrif Saleh out of the squad this year, Malaysia proved it has strength in depth in road cycling after successfully defending the men's mass start road race gold today.

Nur Amirull Fakhruddin Mazuki, who was unlucky to be pipped to the gold in the criterium yesterday, made no mistakes as he outkicked the other riders in his breakaway group to claim an emphatic victory.

Amirull was supported by teammates Akmal Hakim Zakaria, Shahrul Mat Amin, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff, the latter had won the road race gold last year.

National taekwondo exponents did well to claim two gold via the poomsae events. Nur Humaira Abdul Karim delivered a surprise gold in the women's individual event while her sister Nurul Hidayah joined forces with Jason Loo to claim the mixed team gold.

In athletics, hopes of reclaiming the coveted men's 100 metre gold were dashed as Soraoat Dapbang made sure the gold stayed with Thailand. Malaysia's Haiqal Hanafi claimed the bronze while Khairul Hafiz Jantan finished fourth.

The men's 4x400 metre quartet of Firdaus Zemi, Ruslem Zikry Putra Roseli, Tharshan Shanmugam and Umar Osman were, however, able to clinch Malaysia's first medal in the event since Myanmar 2013 after finishing third in the final.

Snooker stalwarts Moh Keen Hoo-Lim Kok Leong suffered a shock defeat to Cambodia's Chhay Suon-Sophanith Men in the men's doubles final. It was Cambodia's first ever gold in the sport at the Sea Games.
