KUALA LUMPUR: China reigned supreme on the opening day of the Hangzhou Asian Games by winning 20 gold, seven silver and three bronze medals on Sunday.
The Chinese team won a majority of their gold medals in rowing (six gold) and swimming (seven gold).
South Korea moved up from seventh to second with a 5-4-5 haul, thanks to the standout performance of Jun Woong Tae (two gold medals) in modern pentathlon.
Japan occupy third position with two gold, seven silver and five bronze medals.
Indonesia are still the best-performing Southeast Asian nation in eighth place with one silver and three bronze.
While Malaysia have not won a medal, Brunei made it to the podium by winning a silver in wushu.
