Birthday delight for Heng Wai as Malaysia clean sweep Ace Challenger

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a double delight for Malaysian squash as Amir Amirul Azhar and Wong Heng Wai clinched the men's and women's ACE PSA WSF Satellite No. 4 titles at the NSC Courts here on Saturday.

Second seed Amir fought back from a first-game blemish to beat Singapore's fifth seed Samuel Kang 7-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 in the men's final.

For Heng Wai, it was a perfect birthday present as the second seed, who turned 21 on Saturday, won the women's crown by overcoming Jemyca Aribado of the Philippines 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-1.

World No. 209 Heng Wai said it was her first title after returning to action in April following a six-month absence due to a right wrist injury.

"It is my second tournament since returning from an injury. The title is definitely a perfect birthday gift for me," said Heng Wai.

She will head to Yale University in Connecticut in August after getting a full scholarship to study engineering.

However, for now, she will focus on her next tournament at the PSNS President's Cup, which begins on June 25 in Seremban.

Meanwhile, Amir, 21, said it was his first ACE Satellite title after twice finishing runner-up this year.

The Kelantan-born, a member of the national back-up squad, will play in several ACE Challengers in Terengganu next month before representing his state in the Sarawak Sukma Games in August.
