Speed demon Azeem won't feel scared in Paris

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's fastest man, Azeem Fahmi, is going to this month's Paris Olympics with that anything-can-happen attitude.

Azeem, who has received an Olympic wild card, won't be intimidated by the world class field at the greatest show on Earth.

In fact, he reckons that the 100m race is not about the contenders heading to Paris with "very impressive times".

"It does not matter how fast you can run, or how good your personal record is, but on competition day anything can happen and it depends on your performance on the day itself," said Azeem who holds the national 100m record of 10.09 seconds.

Azeem said he aims to prove he is worthy of the Olympic wild card given to him.

"This is a huge stage for me, and of course my target is to set my best time for this season or to break the national record.

"Qualifying for the final seems difficult but who knows what can happen. It has been a while since we had a sprinter at the Olympics and I received this chance at 20 years old.

"Whatever happens, I feel positive about heading to Paris because you need this mentality to be a great athlete," said Azeem who won two gold (200m and 4x100m) at the Asean University Games in Malang-Surabaya, Indonesia, early this week.
