Malaysia joins world record chess bid

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Chess Federation will join a global attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most chess games played in 24 hours.

The attempt is in conjunction with the World Chess Federation's (FIDE) centenary celebrations and World Chess Day this Saturday.

From beginners to grandmasters, classrooms to streets, online or over-the-board games, chess players from any corner of the world can participate in the celebrations.

Meanwhile, the eighth edition of the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championships is happening in George Town, Penang.

The tournament, from July 12 to July 20, sees 364 players from 16 countries participating in six age groups: the Open, Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18.

The championship is co-hosted by the Malaysian Chess Federation and Penang Chess Association.

"The young talents are vying for trophies and medals. They also have excellent opportunities to qualify for international titles and norms awarded by FIDE.

"They are International Master (IM), Women's International Master (WIM), FIDE Master (FM), Women's FIDE Master (WM), Candidate Master (CM), Women's Candidate Master (WCM)

"Among the entries are three FIDE Masters in the Open, and two women's FIDE Masters and a woman's Candidate Master in the girls.

"The highest-rated player is a 15-year-old FIDE Master from Penang, Poh Yu Tian, who aims to earn his International Master title," said the association in a press release.
