Tang Jie-Ee Wei give Malaysia much to cheer about in Paris

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's unheralded mixed doubles Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have now charged into the Olympic quarter-finals as darkhorses.

They now have everyone taking notice of them after stunning China's world No. 2 Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping 17-21, 21-15, 21-16 today to top Group D, unbeaten, in three matches.

Though Tang Jie-Ee Wei are Olympic newcomers, they have certainly proved their mettle, and now they have every chance of a podium finish in Paris.

Their opponents in the quarter-finals on Aug 1 will be known after the draw is done.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's women's singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei started her Olympic campaign on a bright note by beating world No. 103 Johanita Scholtz of South Africa in a Group H clash.

Olympic debutant Jin Wei, who is ranked world No. 32, shrugged off a slow start to win 23-21, 21-11.

Jin Wei will meet South Korea's world No. 17 Kim Ga Eun on Wednesday to decide the group winner. Only the winner will advance to the knockout round.
