ANKARA: Belgium have withdrawn from Monday's Paris 2024 triathlon relay after an Olympian fell ill, Anadolu Agency (AA) reported.
In a statement, the team announced that Belgian triathlete Claire Michel, one of the relay members, is "unfortunately ill and has to withdraw from the competition."
The statement further explained that after consultation with the athletes and their entourage, the Belgian team will not "take part in the mixed relay at the Paris Olympic Games tomorrow."
On July 31, Michel, 35, participated in an Olympic triathlon event in the women's individual category, swimming in the River Seine.
French sports daily L'Equipe reported that Michel had been taken to hospital after being infected with E. coli.
The first training session for triathletes at the Paris Olympics was previously cancelled due to pollution in the River Seine, according to organisers.
The women's and men's triathlon events were subsequently held on July 31.
France's Cassandre Beaugrand won the gold medal in the women's individual event, while Britain's Alex Yee secured the gold in the men's individual event at Paris 2024 on Wednesday.
The Olympics will conclude on August 11. --BERNAMA
