KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor track star Nur Afrina Batrisyia Rizal continued to shine, completing the sprint double by winning the gold medal in the 200m at the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) today.
Despite running on a wet track, Afrina delivered a sensational run, breaking the Sukma record with a time of 23.89 seconds in the final at Sarawak Stadium.
This achievement saw her surpass the previous record of 24.37s set by Perak's Noor Eewan Syafiqah Sabri during the 2016 edition, also held in Sarawak.
Afrina's victory also allowed her to defend the gold medal she won two years ago in the Kuala Lumpur Sukma.
The silver medal went to Terengganu's Izzatul Musfirah Ahmad Kamal Azira, who clocked 24.52s, while the bronze was claimed by Sarawak's Ormilla Octavia Codday Nyadau with a time of 24.94s.
On Monday, Afrina also broke the games record when she won the 100m event with a time of 11.64s.
"I am very happy because my mission to win gold and break the games' records in both the 100m and 200m events have been accomplished.
"In fact, I didn't expect to achieve this time now, although I knew I could eventually. This is the result of my hard work in training, staying focused, and keeping calm before the race. I didn't think about who my competitors were... instead, I competed against myself," she said.
Meanwhile, the men's event saw Penang's Sayyid Amin Roslan pull off a surprise by winning gold with a time of 21.221s, edging out Johor's 100m champion Danish Iftikhar Roslee, who had to settle for second place with 21.225s.
The bronze medal went to Sabah's Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam, who clocked 21.60s.
