KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor's Tay Jun Qian was stretched to the limit by Kang Wook Seok of South Korea before prevailing 11-13, 12-10, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4 in the final to win the red ONE-Synex WSF and PSA Satellite fourth and final series today.
In the semi-finals, the third seeded Jun Qian came back from two sets down to beat another South Korean, Oh Seo Jin, 13-5, 6-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 at the Astaka Courts in Petaling Jaya yesterday.
Jun Qian, 19, ranked 338 in the world, was delighted as he finally won the fourth satellite after losing in the third satellite final a few weeks ago.
"The final against the Korean was intense but I am happy to nail the title. And I look forward to joining more Synex satellite tournaments next year.
Singapore's Cassandra Ong won the women's title with a 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 win over South Korean Boram Ryoo in the final.
Farid Yunus, Group CEO at red ONE Network Sdn Bhd and also the president of Squash Racquets Association of Selangor, said he was happy to see a Selangor player win a Satellite title to move up the world rankings.
"SRAS has also agreed to subsidise the entry fee for Selangor players who join satellite tournaments organised by SYNEX next year."
