KUALA LUMPUR: An all-Malaysian table tennis final is a rare sight in major tournaments, but it became a reality at the Sea Championships in Bangkok today.
Javen Choong-Karen Lyne, the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallists, clinched Malaysia's second title at the tournament by defeating compatriots Wong Qi Shen and Tee Ai Xin 11-6, 4-11, 11-4, 11-9 in the mixed doubles final.
National coach Beh Lee Wei hailed the historic moment, as it marked the first time two Malaysian pairs had contested a mixed doubles final.
"Javen-Karen played brilliantly to secure the second gold here. This is already Malaysia's best-ever outing in the history of the tournament," said Lee Wei when contacted in Bangkok today.
"We are hoping for more medals in the men's and women's singles and doubles events tomorrow," Lee Wei added.
On Thursday, Javen led Malaysia to a stunning 3-1 victory over defending champions Thailand in the men's team final.
The women's team added a bronze to the tally.
So far, Malaysia have secured two golds, one silver, and one bronze at the Sea Championships, with the potential for more medals on the final day of competition.
