Slimming supplement from Malaysia flagged for banned substances

KUALA LUMPUR: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has flagged three Malaysian slimming supplements containing prohibited substances.

In a Facebook post, SFA said the products, Lemo A Detox Slimming Sachets, Lemo S Detox Slimming Sachets, and Lemo D Detox Slimming Sachets contain either sibutramine or sennosides.

Side effects of sibutramine include anxiety, headaches, dizziness, abdominal pain, and palpitations, among others.

Sennosides which are typically used to treat constipation can lead to stomach pain, diarrhoea, and nausea among others.

SFA said the three products were being sold on e-commerce platforms and marketed as weight-loss products.

It said it was working with the e-commerce platforms to remove listings of the products and issued warnings to the sellers to stop selling the products.

"Consumers who have purchased the implicated products should not consume it.

"Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice."

In September, SFA flagged two Malaysian candies containing Sibutramine, Sennosides, Phenolphthalein and Frusemide.

The candies also sold on e-commerce platforms, claimed to aid in weight loss.
