MELAKA: A participant of the ‘Taming Sari Tower Base Jump 2019’ had a brief moment of panic when his parachute got tangled on a lamp post during landing in front of the Taming Sari Tower in Bandar Hilir last night.
In the 10.30pm incident, the local jumper was left hanging for about five minutes before he was rescued by firemen.
Fortunately, the man in his 30s, who refused to talk to the media, did not suffer any injuries and only needed a normal treatment from a medical officer.
The two-day extreme sport programme, which ended today, was launched by Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari.
Adly said Melaka supports this kind of programme in effort to attract more tourists to the state in conjunction with Visit Melaka Year 2019.
He said the state government was also willing to evaluate from time to time some new tourism products such as extreme sports that have proven to attract more new tourists to the state.
“However, in diversifying tourism promotions, including this extreme sport, we do not ignore safety issues in terms of its organisation.
“It’s proven by our success in hosting some of the world's most extreme sports programmes at the tallest buildings and towers in this state,” he said in a press conference at the Taming Sari Tower last night.
Also present was state Tourism, Culture and Heritage exco Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis.
The programme involved a 110-meter jump in just five seconds and brought together a total of 32 professional jumpers from 11 countries, including from the United States, Australia, Russia, United Kingdom, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia.
Previously, the Base Jump programme was organised at The Shore Sky Tower from March 19 to 21.
