KUALA LUMPUR: The New Straits Times Press won a total of 10 awards at the MPI-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2023 tonight.
Four of the awards went to the New Straits Times, three to Harian Metro and three to Berita Harian.
The NST won gold in the Excellent News Reporting category, a silver in the Petronas Excellent Environmental Journalism category as well as two bronze, namely in the Best Frontpage Design and Excellent Editor's Column categories.
NST group editor Farrah Naz Karim took home the Excellent News Reporting award for her articles titled "Mossad behind KL abduction" and "Smoking out spooks".
When met, Farrah Naz was elated over her win.
"Journalists should always sharpen their tools, push boundaries and go where others don't tread. That is what NST journalists are trained to do.
"The NST will continue producing compelling content for all of its platforms. Stay tuned to NST as we enhance our print and digital products," she said.
NST's Elena Simala Koshy won the silver award for environmental journalism with her reports titled "Ensnared elephants, the final song" and "Don't blame mother nature".
NST executive editor, production, David Christy won bronze in the Excellent Editor's Column for his opinion pieces titled "Boss, please make it 'kurang garam' ah. I have high BP lah"; "In this age, English proficiency is not the be-all and end-all"; and, "Secondhand goods are not sexy lah".
Meanwhile, NST graphic artist Mohd Norsafuan Mohd Ali Saman won a bronze award for Best Front Page Design.
Meanwhile, Yusmizal Dolah Aling, from NST's sister publication, Harian Metro, took home the much-coveted Kajai Award, the nation's top prize in journalism, with his pieces titled "Terima kasih Laoshi", "Hadiah Raya paling bermakna, Rohana Abdullah kini warga Malaysia" and "Sanjung Budi Laoshi".
Harian Metro also took home two other awards.
Berita Harian, meanwhile, took three awards in the categories of Excellent News Reporting, Best Frontpage Design and Excellent Photojournalism.
NSTP group managing editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman said the win proves NSTP's credibility in reporting.
"What's important is that this victory will give an extra shot of energy to everyone in the company to work harder and produce more comprehensive and balanced reports, not merely to win awards but to deliver accurate information to readers.
"This is our effort to help the larger public," he said.
Guest of honour at the MPI-Petronas Malaysian Journalism Awards 2023 was Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Also present were Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil and his deputy, Teo Nie Ching.
