Two main ports in Johor on course to meet target of handling 9.5 mln TEUs

PASIR GUDANG: The two main ports in Johor; the Johor Port in Pasir Gudang and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) are on course to meet a target of handling 9.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) this year.

Johor Port Authority (JPA) general manager Muhammad Razif Ahmad said this year's target was slightly higher than the cargo handled last year, which was 9.2 million TEUs.

"Between January and June this year, the Johor Port handled a total of 423,493 TEUs, which is 5.42 per cent higher than the total of 401,721 TEUs it handled in the same period last year.

"For PTP, the total cargo handled in the period decreased by four per cent to 4.14 million TEUs compared to 4.31 million TEUs handled in the same period last year," said Razif.

He said despite the slight drop in the figure, JPA is optimistic that the ports would be able to meet the target set for this year considering the upward trend of numbers in cargo handling since April.

Razif was speaking to the media after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration at JPA's headquarters here. Also present was JPA chairman Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli.

PTP is currently operating at about 80 per cent of its maximum cargo handling capacity, said Razif.
