Compensate businesses affected by IT glitch, Fernandes tells CrowdStrike, Microsoft

SUBANG: Capital A Bhd group chief executive officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has called for the company responsible for the global IT glitch last week to compensate the affected businesses.

The flamboyant co-founder of budget carrier AirAsia said many companies worldwide including the airline had lost millions due to the IT issue and he called for CrowdStrike or Microsoft to bear the responsibility.

"When we had Covid-19 (pandemic), no one had any sympathy for us. Everyone was chasing us for money especially with tech companies. But when we lose one and a half day of sales, no one stuck their hand up to say 'How can we help you?' he asked.

"I'm not talking about people having issues. That's the world. Everyone's going to have a breakdown and I understand that and I respect that. But I think how you help your partners during a crisis, it's what separates dream from ordinary world. That was my message," Fernandes said.

He was speaking to the media after the launch of AirAsia's new flights to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu out of Subang Airport.

Fernandes said whichever company that was responsible for the global IT outage has to go to their customers and offer compensation.

"So CrowdStrike, I shouldn't ask. They should come to me. Or Microsoft or whoever. I don't know exactly who was right or wrong here. They should offer us compensation," he added.

CrowdStrike founder and CEO George Kurtz had apologised to the company's customers and partners a few days ago for the crash in their Windows system.
