Bursa Malaysia closes mixed as foreign funds help keep key index afloat

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia closed a mix on Wednesday after foreign fund flows helped keep the key index in the green while the broader market fell into the red.

At 5pm, FTSE bursa Malaysia KLCI rose 0.18 per cent or 3.01 points to 1,673.38 buoyed by plantation as well as industrial products and services heavyweights that lifted sentiments.

The key index moved between 1,665.19 and 1,675.73 levels throughout the day.

The broader market was negative with losers leading gainers 787 to 397 while 476 counters were unchanged.

Tradeview Capital Sdn Bhd vice president Tan Cheng Wen said the index closed higher today  attributed to foreign fund flows returning to the local bourse the past couple weeks with utilities, financial services and construction being the main beneficiaries.

"This upcycle may continue as we see no upcoming major catalyst that will affect Bursa, with most major events already priced in - the 50 basis points interest rate cut by the United States Federal Reserve and the huge stimulus announcement by China which occurred recently," he told Business Times.

On the index board, FBM100 lost 0.25 per cent to 12,184,50, FBM Ace shed 1.02 per cent to 5,131.68 while FBM Emas dropped 0.3 per cent to 12,484.04.
