KUALA LUMPUR: Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, a member of the MMC Group, has set new annual throughput records in both its container and conventional cargo business segments.
As of Nov 27, Northport had processed 3.33 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers, exceeding its previous annual record of 3.32 million TEUs achieved in 2021.
"A day later, on Nov 28, 2024, the company also broke its conventional cargo record, handling 11.43 million freight weight tonnes (FWTs), exceeding the previous annual record of 11.4 million FWTs achieved in 2023," it said.
Northport former chief executive officer Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, who has assumed a new position within the MMC Group as CEO of MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd, said the year has been challenging for the port and shipping industry, driven by global factors such as geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea region.
"These disruptions have significantly impacted global trade routes and port operations, prompting liners to make ad-hoc calls to other ports.
"Despite these challenges, with an increase in ad hoc calls and the introduction of new services calling at Northport, we are proud to have achieved extraordinary milestones in both container and conventional cargo throughput with record breaking performance in 2024, with one month still to go," he added.
Over the last three years, Northport has delivered performances in both its container and conventional cargo segments.
In 2021, the company recorded its highest-ever container throughput of 3.32 million TEUs, surpassing the previous record of 3.3 million TEUs set in 2010.
In 2022, Northport reached a new milestone in its conventional cargo segment, handling 11.1 million FWTs - the largest volume achieved in a single year since 2000.
Last year, the company broke its 2022 record by achieving a new peak of 11.4 million FWTs in conventional cargo.
