KUALA LUMPUR: Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced the drafting of a new ethical dress code for national athletes after the Jalur Gemilang emblem appeared upside down on Lee Zii Jia's jersey during the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou.
World No. 8 Zii Jia was seen on television wearing the said jersey during his match against Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen on Wednesday.
Zii Jia's sponsor, Viktor, the maker of the jersey, has apologised for the oversight in an official statement yesterday. The sports equipment company also promised that such incident will not be repeated in the future.
Yeoh said: "We never had a dress code or regulations to check this issue before this. Therefore, I want the National Sports Council to come up with suggestions to ensure such matters do not occur again after this."
Yeoh said players and officials of national teams must do their part in avoiding such grave errors as it involves the nation's pride.
"I also urge the players, officials and the management team to check that everything on their jerseys is in order before getting on to the court. This applies to all national and independent shuttlers.
"This is because the error will be clearly visible to local and international viewers watching the matches live," Yeoh told the media at the closing of the International Safe Sport Symposium today.
