Malaysia imposes duties of between 6.33pct and 37.44pct on recyclable plastic imports from China, Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has decided to impose provisional anti-dumping duties of between 6.33 per cent and 37.44 per cent on imports of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET), or highly recyclable plastic, originating from China and Indonesia.

PET is used among others, for packaging, textiles, containers and bottles.

According to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) the duties are effective from Jan 7, 2025.

It said the duties will be applied for not more than four months to mitigate further harm to the domestic industry.

A final determination on the issue will be made by May 6, 2025.

MITI's decision follows the preliminary findings of an investigation initiated on August 9, 2024 under the Countervailing and Anti-Dumping Duties Act 1993 and its associated regulations.

"The government has found that there is sufficient evidence to continue with further investigation on the importation of the subject merchandise from the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Indonesia, " MITI said.

In August last year, the government launched an investigation into anti-dumping duties on PET originating from China and Indonesia.

The probe was initiated following a petition from domestic producer, Recron (M) Sdn Bhd.

The company alleged that imports of the subject merchandise originating or exported from both countries were sold at a price much lower than their domestic selling prices (dumped price).
