KUALA LUMPUR: Celebrity chef Datuk Fazley Yaakob is doing his part "modernising and upgrading" hospital food in 16 medical centres around the country.
These menus include all-time favourites Laksa Negri Sembilan, Tuaran Noodles, Soup A La Doraisamy With Roti Bakar and Pan Mee Noodles which he describes as "good old wholesome Malaysian specialties".
These meals, largely inspired by his mother's home-made recipes, will be available from today in Gleneagles and Pantai Hospitals and the Prince Court Medical Centre.
"Most of us enjoy these foods. I want patients to feel an element of home in their food but with a touch of modernity," said Fazley at the launch of the menus in Pantai Hospital, Jalan Bukit Pantai here today.
"These dishes, which I took a year to devise, are low in calories, sugar, salt and oil. Fresh ingredients have been selected for their high amounts of antioxidants. We want patients to recover as quickly as they can."
Fazley also said that the dishes were prepared by in-house chefs whom he had trained, and each hospital brand features a different menu for patients.
IHH Healthcare Malaysia, the parent company of the hospitals' chief executive officer Jean-Francois Naa thanked Fazley for his "exciting new menus".
"He has provided a great touch of comfort to patients to enhance their overall experience. Good food does not only help recovery but also uplifts spirits and mental and emotional well-being," he said.
Naa also said that they wanted to challenge the perception that hospital food was "bland and boring".
"Hospital food is now flavourful and nutritious at the same time. It is carefully crafted based on patient feedback and dietary requirements," he said.
"All ingredients are sourced locally to ensure that the food is fresh and our organisation's carbon footprint is reduced."
