KUALA LUMPUR: Screen legend Wahid Satay died at his house in Eunos Crescent, Singapore, today. He was 93.
Wahid's death was confirmed by his family friend Rusedah Tawahid.
"I have received the sad news that Wahid Satay passed away at his house at 8am today aged 93," said Rusedah in an interview with Berita Harian Online.
Wahid, whose real name is Abdul Wahid Ahmad, was born in Inderagiri, Sumatra, Indonesia in 1930 and migrated to Singapore when he was 5.
He began his showbiz career as a set painter in Cathay Keris Studios in 1956 and starred in his first film Pontianak a year later.
Wahid derived his stage name from the memorable character he played in the horror film, a brave, honest and helpful satay seller.
Wahid's other well-known films included Satay, Rasa Sayang Eh, Seri Mersing, Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang, Badang, Pontianak Gua Musang, Naga Tasik Chini, Tuan Besar, Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam and Senario XX.
