KUALA LUMPUR: Johan Aziz, former lead singer of pop rock group Slam, is devastated after nine cats, including pregnant ones, were poisoned at his food court in Taman Kosas, here.
The tragic incident, which took place last Tuesday, left him shocked and heartbroken.
"There were kittens, mothers who had just given birth, and even pregnant cats. Five unborn kittens died. The cruelty of those responsible is unimaginable," he told Harian Metro.
Johan, who now manages the food court, explained that the cats had been abandoned near his premises. Wanting to protect them, he built a shelter behind the food court where they were well cared for.
"These cats were fed and looked after. We would let them out once a week to stretch and roam. They were well-behaved, and it breaks my heart that anyone could harm them," he said.
On the day of the incident, Johan's employees arrived to find four cats dead and four others struggling for life, foaming at the mouth. One more cat was missing.
Johan, who is recovering from bone cancer, was in tears after seeing the disturbing photos and videos his staff sent him.
"I've been running this business for over nine years, and nothing like this has ever happened," he shared, adding that many patrons had grown attached to the cats, often offering to adopt them.
Johan hopes that footage from the CCTV cameras will help identify the perpetrator and bring justice for the animals.
