KUALA LUMPUR: The Pas Syura Council has resolved to support Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s position as Selangor menteri besar, two days before the party officially meets on the controversy this Sunday.
The preemptive move to reiterate the party elders’ support came after PKR’s distribution of a 50-page dossier which allegedly detailing Khalid’s misconduct in state dealings and administration.
In a statement signed by Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and his deputy Datuk Dr Haron Din, it is said that the decision to endorse Khalid’s leadership was based on Islamic law (syarak).
The decision was agreed upon during the council’s meeting in Kota Baru on Wednesday night.
The Syura, which is Pas’ highest decision-making body consists of its foremost religious experts and leaders, furnished its support to Khalid with two articles of the party’s constitution.
The council said the resolution was in view of the people’s interest, which took precedent over individual and party.
“In reference to Article 3 of the Pas’ consitution, which stipulates that the party’s policy is based on Islam, and Article 6 (2) which says among its efforts is the championing of Islam as aqidah (creed) and syariat (jurispudence) and employ it (the religion) as state and political guide.”
The council also reiterated that the appointment of Selangor menteri besar was made collectively by the opposition coalition, including for the second term after the 13th General Election.
It said as long as Khalid was not convicted of offences by bodies of authority such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission or the courts, he should remain as menteri besar.
“Otherwise, the Syura will review its stand on his position as Selangor’s top office bearer.”
