ROMPIN: Pas has named Nazri Ahmad as its candidate to contest in the upcoming Rompin by-election on May 5.
The decision was announced by Pas vice-president Salahuddin Ayub at Bandar Muadzam Shah here tonight.
The 40-year-old from Felda Keratong 5 here is also the Pahang Pas Youth chief and Rompin Pas division chief.
The announcement ceremony was attended by Pahang Pas commissioner and Pas vice-president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Pas elections director Dr Hatta Ramli, Temerloh member of parliament Nasrudin Tantawi as well as other Pas state leaders.
However, top PKR and DAP leaders, including Pahang PKR chief Datuk Fauzi Abdul Rahman was absent.
Nazri, a Syariah studies graduate from Al-Azhar University, Egypt, said he was grateful to the party's top leadership for handing him the opportunity to contest in Rompin and was prepared for the challenge.
The Rompin seat fell vacant following the death of Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis in a helicopter crash in Semenyih, Selangor on April 4.
In the 2013 general election, Jamaluddin retained the Rompin seat with a 15,114 majority by beating Pas candidate Noridah Salleh.
Nomination for the by-election is on Wednesday and polling will be on May 5.
A total of 53, 294 people are expected to cast their votes in the by-election.
