Zeti: Unlikely for me to extend

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, whose term expires at the end of April, reiterated that she is not likely to extend her tenure.

She said the eventuality of someone succeeding her is a certainty.

"In due time you will be informed, it is an eventuality that is going to happen, there is a process for it and you have to be patient," she said, when asked by the media on the sidelines of the IAP official launch ceremony.

Asked if she was requested by the government to stay on in view of the current economic situation, she said no.

On her successor, she said the next governor must have relevant background and ability during a time like this so that the transition can be managed well.

Bank Negara, she said, has become a solid organisation with institutional strength and resilience.

The central bank, which has been enjoying wide-ranging powers and independence, has always been treated with respect and will continue to do so.

"I believe the country - any country - needs an organisation which is not drawn into any political development or agenda and will remain focused on ensuring econ and fin stability so that the policies can directed to achieve what is best interest of the country."

Zeti said during her term, the government has had five finance ministers and three prime ministers and, during the period, BNM has been `treated with respect'.

"I expect this will continue."

Asked if a politician is likely to take over, she said: "Even for financial institutions we do not have politicians as member of the board, least of all, the central bank."

Zeti said she will be taking some time off post-April, write and give support to education entities which the central bank has undertaken.
