Traffic at standstill along Bukit Bintang as cabbies stage protest against Uber, Grab [VIDEO]

KUALA LUMPUR: Taxi drivers in the Klang Valley today staged a massive 'sit-in' protest against ride-sharing services Uber and Grab, today.

The scene of their protest was along the perennially busy Jalan Bukit Bintang, opposite the Pavilion shopping mall.

A sea of red and white taxis flooded the road, as their drivers left their respective vehicles unattended as a mark of protest against the lack of action taken against the ride sharing services, which they claim have affected their livelihood.

The taxis blocking the road also meant that traffic came to a complete standstill along the tourist-friendly stretch of shopping malls, usually regarded as among the busiest roads in the Klang Valley.

Police were on hand to ensure that the situation did not spiral out of control.

Previously on March 26, Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) chairman Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said the commission will look into any discrepancies among all the relevant quarters to tackle issues involving Uber and GrabCar, which have been accused by budget taxi drivers as affecting their income as they offered competitive fares.
