Law student's snatch theft ordeal captured on camera

KUALA LUMPUR: A 20-year-old private college student here suffered multiple injuries on her body when three men tried to snatch her handbag near a church in Jalan Sambanthan here on Friday.

The incident took place at 12.20pm when she was waiting for a taxi. Two men riding a motorcycle approached the victim and tried to snatch her handbag causing the latter to fall and hit her head on the brick pavement.

She initially thought the men escaped after their failed bid. But only seconds later, another motorcyclist approached the victim and grabbed the latter’s mobile phone.

The incident was recorded by closed-circuit television (CCTV) from a church building. The forty-nine seconds of video has gone viral on social media and gained more 87,000 viewers as well as 1,700 shares.

The law student suffered injuries at the back of her head, hand and leg bruises as well as broken teeth. She was taken to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre by a passerby.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainol Samah said the victim lodged a report at the Mantin police station in Negeri Sembilan yesterday.

“We have taken the CCTV to scrutinize the video and police are intensifying efforts to hunt for the three men,” he said adding that the victim could not recognize the men as they were wearing helmets during the incident.

The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for causing hurt in committing robbery.
