PORT DICKSON: A laboratory at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Datuk Haji Abdul Samad was declared off limits to teachers and students after 11 out of 50 bottles of chemicals, including mercury, spilled in the school's lab today.
In the 11.20am incident, the bottles, believed to be more than 40-years-old and kept in a box, accidentally fell while a cleaner was cleaning the lab's store room.
Port Dickson Fire and Rescue chief operation officer S Maniam said, the department received an emergency call at 11.24am despatched 20 personnel to the scene, including the department's hazardous material team.
"All teachers and students were instructed to stay away from the affected area to avoid mishaps. We found spill stains from 11 chemicals," he said.
"Firemen took three hours to clean the chemical spills using water and special detergent," he added.
Maniam said none of the cleaners, teachers and students were injured.
